# Reimagining innovation and entrepreneurial learning: Insights from a staff exchange in Graz strengthening EU4Dual collaboration

> As work-life expectations evolve and artificial intelligence through accessible large language models reshapes how knowledge is produced, assessed and utilized, higher education institutions are increasingly challenged to provide learning that extends far beyond theoretical instruction.

## The Shift in Entrepreneurial Education
Innovation and entrepreneurial education are undergoing a transformation across Europe. Today’s students need experiences that develop resilience, critical judgement when evaluating information, and the ability to operate under uncertainty—capabilities that emerge when navigating authentic entrepreneurial environments rather than simulated scenarios.

This transition was observed during an October 2025 staff exchange at FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences in Graz. The exchange coincided with the *Entrepreneurial and Cross-Cultural Competences Case Challenge 2025*, a development sprint where multidisciplinary teams of national and international students solved challenges provided by the Digital Entrepreneurship & Innovation Master (DEM) programme and RESET: Adaptive Mountain Bike Solutions.

## Ecosystem-Based Learning
The learning model in Graz relies on an interconnected innovation ecosystem, including:
*   Startup Hub FH JOANNEUM
*   Startup Labs
*   Science Park Graz
*   ESA BIC Austria

This environment allows students to access expert mentoring, market-feedback processes, and prototyping paths while advancing their coursework. By engaging directly with real stakeholders and constraints, students develop durable capabilities that traditional classroom methods cannot replicate.

## Insights from the EU4Dual Alliance
The staff exchange served as a platform to deepen collaboration within the EU4Dual alliance. Key takeaways include:
* **Active Decision-Making:** Entrepreneurial capability develops through decision-making and reflection, not passive observation.
* **Human-Centric Competencies:** In an era of AI-driven analytical tasks, skills such as collaboration, empathy, creative concept development, and situational judgement are increasingly critical.
* **Strategic Alignment:** The approach aligns with the EU startup and scaleup strategy, which emphasizes talent mobility and ecosystem-level cooperation.

## Future Development Pathways
Based on the exchange, the EU4Dual alliance is pursuing several concrete initiatives:
*   Future Spring Schools
*   Shared mentoring programs
* Co-created entrepreneurship and innovation course content for winter schools
* Expanded student and staff mobility opportunities
