# Remote guidance in a noisy work environment – Savonia and ATC Automation tested a new solution

## The Challenge of Industrial Environments
Energy, paper, and chemical industries involve large facilities, heavy machinery, loud noise, and strict occupational safety requirements. These conditions pose significant challenges for human work. Equipment and machinery require regular maintenance, and sudden faults must be repaired as quickly as possible. During maintenance shutdowns, a large number of people enter the factory area, many of whom are unfamiliar with the site. Remote guidance and pre-familiarization with the location offer potential solutions to these operational challenges.

## Technology Testing and Setup
ATC Automation and Savonia University of Applied Sciences’ XR-Center tested technology suitable for remote guidance in noisy work environments. The equipment setup included:
* **Smart Glasses:** Vuzix M4000.
* **Headset:** Peltor (MRX21P3E5WS6) noise-canceling headset microphone.
* **Helmet:** Petzl Vertex construction helmet.
* **Connectivity:** The headset microphone connects via Bluetooth to the Vuzix smart glasses, which connect to the internet via a mobile 4G WLAN hotspot carried in the user’s pocket.
* **Mounting:** A prototype mounting bracket for the smart glasses was 3D printed to fit onto the edge of the protective visor.

## Performance and Observations
The noise-canceling headset performed effectively in environments reaching 85–90 decibels, ensuring clear two-way audio communication. The Vuzix smart glasses allowed the user to view the remote party’s computer screen, while the camera transmitted the user's view back. 

Testing was conducted between Savonia’s campus and Kuopio Energy’s Haapaniemi power plant. The 4G connection remained stable despite the power plant's metal structures, with only minor interruptions during elevator travel. The primary challenge identified was the physical fit of the smart glasses' camera housing when used in conjunction with the helmet's hearing protection.

## Future Development and Commercial Potential
While the current equipment is not ATEX certified, Vuzix has previously collaborated on ATEX-certified hardware. The project team noted that Vuzix offers a "Remote Assist" tool for visual annotations, and custom applications can be developed via the Android environment.

Savonia University of Applied Sciences has initiated a mechanical engineering thesis project to refine the helmet mounting adapter, focusing on XYZ-axis adjustability, more durable materials, and robust fastening mechanisms. Research indicates a lack of similar helmet-mounted systems on the market, suggesting significant potential for the commercialization of these results.
