# Learning by Nature: ERASMUS+ BIP in Monitoring Natural Waters - Savonia AMK

## Overview
In September 2025, Savonia University of Applied Sciences hosted a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) titled "Monitoring Natural Waters." The program brought together 25 students from EU4Dual partners KUT (Poland), MCAST (Malta), and Savonia (Finland), along with an exchange student from Spain. The initiative aimed to provide insights into influencing water quality and fostering collaboration toward cleaner natural waters. The week-long intensive in Kuopio combined virtual studies, fieldwork at Lake Pieni-Valkeinen, and laboratory analyses to explore ecology, water quality, and sustainable management.

## The Learning Experience
The program utilized a hybrid approach:
*   **Virtual Modules:** Provided foundational knowledge on water ecosystems, hydrological theory, and environmental threats.
*   **Field Studies:** Involved measuring hydrological parameters and collecting samples to observe local freshwater ecosystems.
*   **Laboratory Work:** Focused on translating raw field data into scientific insights.

The curriculum included collaboration with industry partners, such as the Water Protection Association of Savo-Karjala, and exposure to Savonia’s research projects regarding catchment-based water protection and mining water treatment.

## International Collaboration
A core component of the BIP was the use of mixed-nationality groups. This structure allowed students to:
*   Share diverse perspectives and challenge assumptions.
*   Experience different scientific approaches and communication styles.
*   Develop a sense of shared responsibility for global environmental issues.

## Student Feedback and Program Evaluation
A post-program survey indicated high levels of student satisfaction, with participants highlighting:

*   The effective balance between indoor and outdoor study.
*   The value of the collaborative, intercultural atmosphere.

Suggested improvements for future editions include extending the program duration to allow for deeper data analysis and reflection.

## Lessons for Future Implementation
Organizers identified several key takeaways for managing future BIPs:
*   **Systematic Planning:** Clear, well-structured virtual environments and assignments are essential, especially for students from diverse academic backgrounds.
*   **Place-Based Learning:** Hands-on activities in authentic environments (like Lake Pieni-Valkeinen) proved to be highly motivational.
*   **Future Enhancements:** Potential additions include follow-up virtual sessions and the integration of automated feedback systems similar to MOOC-style learning.

## Global Perspectives on Water
The program highlighted regional differences in water challenges. Discussions revealed that climate change impacts are significantly more severe in Mediterranean countries like Malta and Spain compared to the Baltic region. These exchanges underscored the importance of individual and collective action in protecting water resources, from everyday consumer choices to raising awareness for future generations.
