# Physiotherapy Teacher and Student Exchange in Maputo

> A report on the international collaboration between Savonia University of Applied Sciences and ISCISA in Maputo, focusing on physiotherapy education and student exchange experiences.

## Overview of International Collaboration
International collaboration in healthcare education fosters mutual learning, cultural understanding, and the development of globally competent professionals. The partnership between Savonia University of Applied Sciences and ISCISA in Maputo, supported by the Erasmus+ Global-funded SA-IS project, exemplifies this cooperation. Through teacher and student exchanges, participants gain firsthand experience of diverse healthcare systems, practices, and challenges, contributing to the development of more inclusive and resilient healthcare services.

## Clinical Observations at Hospital Central de Maputo
The Hospital Central de Maputo serves as a university hospital for ISCISA, catering to a population of approximately 3 million people.

* **Operational Structure:** Patients arrive via hospital transfers or referrals from health centers. There are no scheduled appointments; patients are seen in the order of arrival.
* **Physiotherapy Services:** The department treats patients with neurological conditions, musculoskeletal issues, post-operative needs, and respiratory or cardiovascular problems.
* **Facilities:** The gym features fixed treatment tables, pulley systems, exercise balls, free weights, and mobility aids. Physical therapy modalities are a significant part of local practice.
* **Pediatric Physiotherapy:** Conducted in a shared space with mats, treatment tables, standing frames, wall bars, and small assistive devices.
* **Challenges:** The facility faces significant hurdles, including outdated equipment, poor condition of tools, limited financial resources, and a high patient-to-staff ratio.

## Student Internship Experience
The internship at Maputo Central Hospital provided a comprehensive look at public healthcare in Mozambique. Working alongside local students, the internship involved:

* **Clinical Practice:** Independent planning and execution of treatment sessions for neurological, elderly, musculoskeletal, and pediatric patients.
* **Professional Development:** Significant improvement in clinical assessment skills, creativity, and the ability to work under pressure.
* **Cultural Immersion:** Developing a deeper understanding of how cultural factors influence healthcare and strengthening communication skills in a multicultural environment.
* **Social Integration:** Engaging with the local community and peers, which facilitated language learning (Portuguese) and provided a richer educational experience than traditional textbooks.

## Future Collaboration and Development
The partnership between ISCISA and Savonia is set to expand, focusing on digital integration and curriculum development:

* **Remote Guidance:** Pilot initiatives for remote international patient guidance by nursing students, with plans to extend this to physiotherapy.
* **Virtual Learning:** Development of joint virtual case studies and shared online learning environments to strengthen clinical reasoning and intercultural skills.
* **Faculty Cooperation:** Focus on developing physiotherapy curricula, sharing best practices, and creating innovative solutions for resource-limited settings.
