# Varkaus celebrates 90 years of technical education - Savonia AMK

## Anniversary and Current Focus
The 90th anniversary of technical education in Varkaus will be celebrated on October 3, 2025. Today, Savonia’s Varkaus campus trains top experts in energy technology in both Finnish and English. These engineers focus on sustainable energy solutions, addressing challenges related to climate change, environmental issues, and rising energy demands. The campus also hosts the Energy Research Centre, which provides product development, testing, and training services to companies and communities, integrating students directly into professional research activities.

## A Legacy of Industry Cooperation
The strong bond between education and business in Varkaus dates back to the school's inception. This cooperation continues today through internships and thesis projects, with many engineering graduates securing their first professional roles within the local industry.

## Historical Origins: The Walter Ahlström Foundation
The school was established due to the vision of Walter Ahlström, who recognized the urgent need for skilled workers in Varkaus. In 1934, the Walter Ahlström Industrial School Foundation completed the school building, and the first 20 students began a two-year technical program in 1935. As one of the few paper technician training institutions in Finland at the time, the school held national significance, covering subjects such as mechanics, electrical engineering, factory hygiene, and paper and cellulose manufacturing.

## Post-War Development and Growth
The Second World War interrupted operations, with the building serving as a military hospital. Following the war, the school expanded its curriculum to include machine building to support the industry's war reparations production. By 1960, the institution had graduated 247 paper technicians and 150 machine technicians.

## Evolution of Technical Education
*   **1966:** The school became municipal after the foundation donated the property to the city of Varkaus, with the stipulation that the founder's name be preserved.
*   **1970s–1980s:** The curriculum expanded to include measurement, control technology, and electrical engineering to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and the increasing use of computer applications in local industry.
*   **1985:** Walter Ahlström Technical College (WATOL) celebrated its 50th anniversary and relocated to new premises.
*   **1990s:** The institution transitioned toward higher education, participating in the national university of applied sciences pilot program.
*   **2004:** The institution became part of the permanent university of applied sciences, officially adopting the name Savonia.

## Impact and Future
Throughout its history, Varkaus has produced engineers in fields such as industrial engineering, automation, information technology, software engineering, and electrical power engineering. Graduates frequently move into roles such as project, development, or design engineers, shift supervisors, and quality managers.

The legacy of Walter Ahlström remains visible today through the naming of the campus building and the Walter Ahlström Engineering Students Association (WAIO Ry).
