# Energy Research Centre - Savonia AMK

> The Energy Research Centre offers product development, product testing and training services for technology companies and other organisations operating in energy production, transfer and distribution.

## Services

The Energy Research Centre provides product development, testing, and training services. We are a testing laboratory T301 accredited by the FINAS accreditation service (accreditation requirement SFS EN ISO/IEC 17025).

### Emission Measurements
We perform emission and particle concentration measurements for power plants and incineration plants, including:
*   Gas component concentrations (using Gasmet DX4000 FTIR and MRU MGAprime Q NDIR gas analysers).
*   Particle measurements (using STL Combi Dust Sampler).
*   Flue gas temperature and flow measurements (using VelociCalc micromanometer with K-type sensors and L- or S-pitot tubes).
*   Measurement plans and operating reports.
*   Advice on measuring site safety and preparation.

**Standards:**
*   Gaseous emissions: CEN/TS 17337, EN 14789, EN 14790, ISO 12039, SFS-EN 15267-4, SFS 5624.
*   Particle measurements: SFS-EN 13284-1.
*   Flow measurements: SFS-EN ISO 16911-1.

### Fuel Analysis
We determine fuel properties and quality, including moisture content, energy content (calorific value), and ash content.
*   **Standards:** SFS EN ISO 21654:2021, 18134-2:2017, 18122:2022:en.

### Material Processing and Corrosion Testing
*   **High-temperature rotary tube furnace:** Enables calcination and heat processing (+20 °C to +1000 °C) with adjustable residence times (1/2 – 4 hours) and controlled gas atmospheres (air, nitrogen, nitrogen-hydrogen).
*   **Boiler material corrosion testing:** Uses a water- and air-cooled corrosion monitoring probe placed inside a fluidised bed boiler to study the effects of fuels, additives, and contamination.
*   **Bed reaction tests:** Analysis of difficult fuels and sorbents to manage bed melting points and ash behavior.

### Efficiency Analyses
Boiler efficiency determination for hot water plants using direct or indirect methods according to SFS-EN 12952-15 or customized requirements.

### Purifier Testing
The centre features an electric filter and a bag filter to test technical solutions for flue gas purification under various conditions.

## Facilities and Equipment

Our research hall covers 166 square metres with a height of 12 metres.

*   **Fluidised bed boiler:** 300 kW maximum output, 8 metres high, 600 nm3/h flue gas capacity. Used for analyzing fuel mixing ratios and flue gas generation.
*   **Grate-fired boiler:** 500 kW power output, 1.2 x 1 m firebox. Equipped with a bio-burner for pellets, wood chips, and peat.
*   **Geothermal wells:** Two 125-metre wells.
*   **Exchanger and accumulator test environment.**

## Projects

### Current Projects
*   **North-Savo Energy Sector Development:** Focuses on carbon-neutral energy production, circular economy, and ash-related problem solving. (Oct 2022 – Sept 2026). Co-funded by the EU.
*   **Northern Savo Energy Cluster Consolidation:** Promotes carbon-neutral value chains, hydrogen economy, and energy storage. (Aug 2023 – April 2026). Co-funded by the EU.
