## Climate and Seasons
Since Finland is located in the north and in the zone where southern and polar air masses meet, weather types can change quite quickly, especially in winter time, when the temperature can vary between +5 to -35 C. Savonia is located in Eastern Finland where you can really experience the four seasons.

## Finnish Culture and Social Norms
Luckily the Finns are warm at heart, especially when you get under their silent appearances.

“An introverted Finn looks at their shoes when talking to you; an extroverted Finn looks at your shoes”. Yes, Finns are considered to be silent. Unless you give them cell phones 🙂 Finns like to keep their distance and also give room for other people. We are humble and reliable. The culture in non-hierarchical, so you can e.g. address your teachers by their first names.

## Food and Traditions
Finnish culture is an interesting mixture of Western and Eastern cultures. One can find examples of impacts of these two cultures e.g. in the food culture. Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus are a part of Eastern Finland. When you get here, you must try the local specialty, *kalakukko* (fish-rooster): and if you dare… try out *mämmi*.

## Learning the Language
*Korkeakoulu*? *Polkupyörä*? *Tenttikirja*? Finnish language is like a code language. It resembles hardly any other language in the world. But if you learn Finnish, it will open a door to the Finnish culture – and even better, to the Finnish working life. Yes, you can survive in Finland with English, but if you wish to be employed here, hop into the Finnish language courses that Savonia offers for its students.

## Safety and Society
Finland is one of the safest countries in the world. You can walk in the streets safely even at night while being alone. Finland is an equal democracy and a very stable society. Everything just functions, so your every-day life is smooth.
