ObjectivesThe aim of this course is that students get familiar with the most used materials in mechanical engineering, especially steels. Other materials discussed are cast iron and nonferrous metals. With different structural materials the scope is to understand mechanical properties of metals, manufacturing routes and service conditions subject to composition and internal structures of metals. These can be affected by heat treatment and degree of deformation. The fundamentals of material selection and fracture mechanics are also explored.

Within this study module also corrosion of materials, which is closely related to reduction-oxidation reactions as well as electrochemistry, is covered. During this study module students will take part in practical training in the laboratory of material technology.
