My exchange at DHBW Lörrach was an unforgettable experience that combined academic learning, cultural exchange, company visits and international friendships.

I arrived in Lörrach at the end of June 2026, and DHBW had already arranged my hotel accommodation, which made the arrival and check-in process very smooth. The programme was well organized from the very beginning. We were welcomed with a traditional German lunch before heading on a hike to Rötteln Castle, where we explored the historic ruins and enjoyed panoramic views of the city.

The days that followed were filled with lectures, workshops, company visits, and excursions across Germany, Switzerland, and France. Every day offered a new learning opportunity, making the programme both exciting and enriching.

A Unique Learning Experience

One of the most interesting aspects of the exchange was learning about DHBW’s dual education system. I was impressed by how students alternate between studying at the university and working for partner companies throughout their degree. This approach allows students to gain valuable professional experience alongside their studies and graduate with strong practical skills.

Another highlight was the Intercultural Training Workshop. Through interactive activities, we explored different communication styles, teamwork, observation skills, and cultural adaptation. I also particularly enjoyed the lecture on Germany’s economy, which gave me an opportunity to compare it with the Finnish economy.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The excursions and company visits were among the most memorable parts of the programme.

During a guided hike on Feldberg Mountain, we learned about nature conservation and biodiversity. Swimming in Lake Titisee, surrounded by the Black Forest landscape, was a beautiful experience.

Company visits to ARaymond and Roche provided valuable insights into innovation, vocational training, and collaboration between universities and industry. The Design Thinking workshop at Vitra Haus introduced creative approaches to solving real-world challenges and encouraged us to think differently about problem-solving.

International Connections and Personal Growth

The exchange offered much more than academic knowledge.

I met students from many different parts of the world, which gave me the opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions, languages, and foods. We shared experiences, exchanged ideas, and built friendships that I hope will continue long after the programme.

Meeting professionals during the company visits also helped me better understand how international companies operate and allowed me to expand my professional network.

On a personal level, the experience helped me become more confident when communicating with people from different backgrounds and more adaptable in unfamiliar environments. It strengthened my teamwork and intercultural communication skills while broadening my perspective on studying and working internationally.

Challenges Along the Way

The programme was intensive, with a full schedule almost every day. Balancing learning, travelling, and rest, was sometimes challenging. At the same time, the busy schedule made the experience rewarding, as every activity provided new opportunities to learn and gain new experiences.

Travelling to Germany also came with some challenges. Due to delays, I missed several connecting trains during my journey. One train was delayed by almost four hours, which meant that I was unable to sleep throughout the night.

Travelling Green

Despite the delays, I am happy that I chose to travel by train instead of flying.

Travelling by rail significantly reduces carbon emissions and gave me the opportunity to enjoy the changing landscapes across Europe. Although the journey was less convenient than expected, it reinforced my belief that choosing more sustainable travel options is worthwhile whenever possible.

Looking Back

Overall, my exchange at DHBW Lörrach was an enriching experience that combined academic learning, practical industry insights, cultural exchange, and personal growth. It is an experience I will always value and one that has encouraged me to continue exploring international opportunities in the future.
