Description | In Finland's National Climate and Energy Strategy 'Carbon Neutral Finland 2035,' the means by which Finland can meet the climate targets set by the European Union are outlined. In the strategy, geothermal energy is seen as one of the complementary technologies in the green transition. In the heating sector, the utilization of various types of waste heat is also recognized as a good option in the strategy. In the future, district heating networks are expected to play a role as transmission networks for energy flows from different sources. As energy flows from various energy sources become more common, maintaining the balance of the network will require more attention. This creates a need for temporary energy storage to keep the energy network balanced. Storage can also reduce the need for peak boilers required for peak demand, thereby reducing the need for energy production by leveling consumption peaks.
The project investigates and pilots different ways to store energy when there is overproduction and ways to use it when the demand for heat increases. Possible storage methods include storage in the ground and thermochemical storage. The project is carried out in four work packages. The work packages are: 1) Energy storage in the ground, 2) Thermochemical energy storage, 3) Bulk energy storage, and 4) Project management, communication, and national and international cooperation. The project will result in researched knowledge on energy storage in the ground, bulk storage, and thermochemical storage. This information can be utilized in companies' research and development activities related to the green transition and in investment plans related to companies' green transition. |
