Description | The worsening labor shortage of technical industry experts is a serious challenge for many municipalities. There are approximately 7,500 experts in the technical sector of municipalities, of which about 2,900 (38%) will retire by 2031. The relative rate of retirement will be highest in Eastern and Northern Finland. The need for urban planning experts is particularly emphasized because the current educational offerings do not adequately meet the ever-growing demand. The lack of resources for land use planning affects municipalities' ability to fulfill their regulatory obligations at the speed required by citizens and businesses. The shortage of urban planning experts has been specifically examined in the Ministry of the Environment's 2023 study on urban planners (Ministry of the Environment Publications 2023:38) and in the extensive 2023 survey on the shortage of technical sector experts in municipalities by the Association of Finnish Municipalities.
In response to this identified need, Savonia plans to launch a Qualification Training Program for Urban Planners, aiming to address the competency needs in urban planning. The program is designed to be 60 credits in extent and will last 1.5 years, delivered in a multi-modal format. |
