Description | Overconsumption of water resources globally threaten the operating conditions of both
communities and industry. There is a need to increase water recycling in both communities and industry. These needs are especially emphasized in areas where drought has significantly increased in recent years. Industry in Finland has been developing its internal water cycles for years. At the moment, these needs are particularly emphasized in the mining industry, where the aim is to develop water cycles in production processes and to increase water reuse. The ultimate goal is to reduce the consumption of clean water in mining operations, while reducing the water footprint of the mines, and on the other hand, to better control the water emissions caused by mining operations. These measures have a positive effect, e.g. to the social acceptability of the mining industry. Effective management of water cycles requires the joint use of advanced water treatment technologies and reject fraction treatment methods. Membrane technologies offer an effective method for removing various harmful substances from waste water, while producing high-quality water suitable for reuse. The challenges of membrane technologies are clogging sensitivity and the need for further treatment of reject waters. The project develops the following solutions to enable water cycles: - Preventing the clogging of membrane filtration technologies by integrating advanced pre-filtration methods with membrane technologies and by optimizing filters driving cycles in real life conditions. - Further concentration of reject waters formed by membrane filtration and solidification of superconcentrates using crystallization, vacuum evaporation and advanced precipitation methods. - Development of on-line monitoring of the composition of solid fractions to promote their beneficial use. The project creates new international business opportunities for the participating SMEs and to enhance concrete cooperation between companies. |
