| Description | The TermoC investment project will acquire the machinery and equipment required for the optimization of the thermal processing of biochar and the development of methods, which will be utilized in the TermoC development project. The results produced in the project and the research conducted will support the North Savo’s Just Transition Plan by strengthening social and economic goals, especially to secure the operating conditions of agriculture. With the transition from the use of peat, agricultural entrepreneurs are looking for new materials, for example for growing medias. The investment project will enable the production of purified biochar from underutilized side streams in North Savo that is also suitable for this need.Waste materials from different sources, such as forest industry by-products, and wastewater sludge, biogas plant digestate, need further cleaning before they can be safely used. The project will test cleaning these materials and explore how they can be used through heat treatment.Savonia University of Applied Sciences' extensive equipment base includes a continuous thermochemical biomass reactor, a batch carbonizer and a drum oven, among the equipment enabling thermal processing. With the help of these three devices based on different technologies, the properties of biochar produced by thermal processing will be comprehensively compared, both through laboratory determinations to be carried out and through measurements during processing. The project's investments, machinery and equipment purchases diversify and strengthen Savonia University of Applied Sciences' current equipment base. They enable more accurate thermal processing and the study of its effects on the end products (biochar and distillates). The investments in this project will also develop the service offering of the biolaboratory analyses in the Bio and Circular Economy Research Area and support the quality monitoring of the production of regional SMEs that are moving into the biochar sector or operating in the sector, which will support their research and development work.An investment project is a subset of a pair of projects, the second subset of which is implemented as a development project. The investment project's funding is used to purchase equipment and purchased services that have been competitively tendered in the development project. |
