| Description | The objective of the Responsible Construction and Civil Engineering Sector in Savonia (VASARA) project is to embed circular economy and responsibility into the practices of the construction and civil engineering sector in Northern Savonia. The project establishes a regional circular economy network, surveys the needs of stakeholders, and provides targeted support measures to promote the circular economy. For companies, a responsibility reporting model is developed and implemented, responsibility communication is supported, and the economic feasibility of recycled earth materials is studied. The project creates product cards for recycled earth materials, develops the utilization of demolition concrete and recycled concrete, and assesses their environmental impacts. In addition, operational models are built for the utilization of waste and demolition wood as well as biochar in green construction and other applications. The visibility and impact of the circular economy are strengthened through multichannel communication, and the results and best practices of the project are shared with regional stakeholders and more broadly.
The main target groups of the project are companies in the construction and civil engineering sector in Northern Savonia, clients, designers, developers, as well as producers and sellers of materials. Indirectly, the project also affects municipalities, cities, industry associations, development and educational organizations, residents of the region, and other regions and national actors. The measures aim to improve the competitiveness of companies and their ability to respond to changing legislation and client requirements, increase the utilization of recycled materials and side streams, enhance material circulation, and reduce the sector’s carbon footprint. The network model enables a more permanent change in operating methods and the broad dissemination of results. In the long term, the project develops responsibility and circular economy expertise in the construction and civil engineering sector, increases the share of recycled materials used, and reduces the sector’s negative climate impacts. Companies learn to utilize responsibility as a competitive advantage, and circular economy solutions become embedded in procurement and implementation practices. The results of the project, such as product cards, operational models, and guidelines, are published openly and remain available even after the project ends. The results spread beyond the region through networks, training, and digital channels, and Northern Savonia is profiled as a pioneer in responsible and circular economy-based construction and civil engineering. |
