| Description | The Temahiili project investigates the profitability of capturing biogenic carbon dioxide from small thermal power plants into biogas plants. Biogenic carbon dioxide (hereinafter referred to as Bio-CO2) refers to carbon dioxide that originates from organic material as a result of its combustion or decomposition. Bio-CO2 originates from the natural carbon cycle, which makes it sustainable compared to carbon dioxide from fossil sources. Bio-CO2 in an existing raw material that is formed in various point sources, but it is not yet utilized. However, bio-CO2 processing technologies are still at a developmental stage and understanding of end-uses is incomplete. In order to make investments profitable and create new business, the costs of capture and purification must be investigated, taking into account the limits set by processing technology. End-users for renewable gas can include, for example, energy transport in refrigerants and stored in batteries, the chemical and food industries, agriculture, greenhouses and the construction industry.
The strategic objectives of the project are (1) to investigate the possibilities of carbon dioxide recovery in heating plants, (2) to investigate the quality of the carbon dioxide released as a side stream of biogas production, its usability as such and the need for purification technologies, (3) to investigate the quality requirements of carbon dioxide from the perspective of potential users, (4) to respond to ensuring energy supply and securing jobs in the energy technology sector, (5) to strengthen the formation of biogenic carbon dioxide markets in North Savo and Lapland and (6) to strengthen the efficiency of the use of biogenic carbon dioxide in greenhouses, the food industry and artificial ice at sports venues. The main target groups of the project are energy and bioeconomy companies, agricultural and forestry farms, service companies, operators and educational and research institutions. In addition, the target group includes bioeconomy operators and authorities on a wider national scale, as well as farm-sized biogas plants, planned biogas plants aimed at the production of transport fuel, and equipment suppliers. The target group also includes horticultural operators who use pure carbon dioxide to enhance natural and ecological production growth, which can in the future be replaced by Bio-CO2 from their own heating plant. |
