| Description | Industrial tourism is a growing trend, yet in Northern Savonia it remains a largely untapped
opportunity for creating new business, showcasing the region’s industry and industrial heritage. Experience based travel offerings attract both domestic and international visitors, and the development of industrial tourism also serves the needs of business travelers visiting local industrial companies. Industrial tourism development has not previously been implemented in Northern Savonia on this scale, and the project introduces a new dimension to the region’s tourism offering. Modern operational factories and historical industrial sites that have ceased operations together form a significant and partly underutilized year-round tourism attraction. Previous projects and studies have identified a clear need for productizing tourism services, strengthening sales channels, and utilizing digital solutions. The project Developing Industrial Tourism in Northern Savonia focuses on creating both digital and physical industrial tourism routes, developing and packaging tourism services, establishing a regional network of industrial tourism companies, piloting the developed concepts, and promoting the opportunities of industrial tourism through communication. The target groups of the project include industrial and tourism companies operating in Northern Savonia, business communities, industrial heritage sites, tourism developers, and municipalities. The project highlights the history and stories of industrial companies as part of the regional development of Northern Savonia. Developing industrial tourism brings new added value to both industrial companies and participating tourism operators. The project is jointly implemented by Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Navitas Kehitys Oy. It aligns with the key sectors of the Northern Savonia regional program: tourism, food industry, and mechanical and energy technology. The project’s concrete actions enable the emergence of new multidisciplinary forms of cooperation and network |
