DescriptionThe potential of horse manure as a fertilizer and soil improver is utilized in a various way and processing it can significantly increase its application possibilities in agriculture. Agricultural entrepreneurs have a growing need for cost-effective circular fertilizers. The processing and utilization of manure is associated with many practical and structural challenges, such as high logistics costs, unclear regulations, insufficient information about the properties of manure, and a lack of cooperation between stables and manure users.

The “Manure in Motion” project develops methods for processing horse manure into a more efficiently usable recycled fertilizer and soil improver. To improve usability, the manure is processed into pellet form, which ease its handling and use. The project also strengthens cooperation between different stakeholders by developing ecosystem related to manure. These actions respond to the increasing need of agricultural enterprises to improve fertilizer self-sufficiency and soil fertility by offering locally produced, renewable nutrient solutions that support sustainable and profitable farming.

The project will investigate technological solutions for pelleting horse manure, pilots pellet recipes made from various manure masses, and tests their properties and application in green areas such as fields, gardens, or parks. In addition, the costs and profitability of production will be investigated, and the operating conditions of manure ecosystems will be examined. These increase understanding of the business opportunities of horse manure-based circular fertilizer.

As a result, the project will produce concrete operational models and guidelines for establishing a manure ecosystem and processing a horse manure into pellet-shaped circular fertilizer. The pilot activities will develop and test pellet use at a farm scale and production methods. Based on these, the functionality of the production method and the usability of the recipe on a farm scale will be ensured. The project results will be compiled into a digital information package that practically supports the awareness and use of horse manure as a fertilizer and soil improver and provides information and tools for pelletizing manure and promoting cooperation between stakeholders.

The project will be implemented in the North-Savo region between 1.4.2026 and 31.3.2028 and will be coordinated and implemented by Savonia University of Applied Sciences.
