I have been passionate about being an Engineer since I was little

Oluwabamise’s story

My journey as an international student studying in Finland started in 2019. It was my birthday on Feb 1st when my elder brother came home to wish me a Happy birthday and as well take pictures with me.

He promised me that if I do well in my Final Examinations in High School, I might stand a chance of beginning my University studies in Finland. I was so excited because studying abroad has always been a dream to me, and seeing it gradually coming to reality was just a wonderful experience.

In mid-2022, I discovered Industrial Management Engineering, a new Bachelor’s degree program at Savonia UAS. I have been passionate about being an Engineer since I was little, and I have also had previous studies in the field. I saw the program as an opportunity to gain more experience in the field and build my start-up company, which is one of my long-term career goals.

I began my studies in the Autumn of 2023, which was a new experience for me. We had an amazing orientation week and plenty of free time, which I used to make friends with fellow students on campus, relax in the Campus heart of Savonia, and work together with my fellow course mates in completing assignments and group projects.

We had interesting courses to start with like Technical Drawing, Programming, Mathematics, leadership, and teamwork skills, among many more. We had to learn the art of working together as a team, forming groups to complete assignments and projects, coupled with brilliant and experienced tutors who are interested in our success and understanding every concept being taught.

My group had the privilege to visit Industrial companies around Varkaus like Andritz, Sumitomo FWH, Stora Enso, among many others, where we got to learn the practical nature of their operation and the various departments we might decide to specialize in during our internships and future jobs.

Moving to a new Country, I had to learn to adjust to the Finnish cold and chilly weather, which is totally different from the warm and bright sunlight we experience in the tropics where I am from. I also had to start learning Finnish Language as a course along with my studies for me to integrate better into the culture.

The language seems a little difficult to learn, but if you’re passionate about it and practice every day, you will definitely learn the basics. Finns are really quiet and gentle people, more passive than active, and might be a bit challenging to socialize with at first, but when you get to understand their Culture and way of doing things better, it will be a lot easier.

After graduation, I want to specialize in the technology aspect of Industrial Management Engineering, working as a project designer for notable Companies in my Home-Country and Finland.

To future applicants, I encourage you to take bold steps just like I did to study your dream profession, and Savonia might be a great starting point for you where you get to enjoy our top-notch facilities and the beautiful nature of Finland with breathtaking sceneries both on campus and off-campus.
