Mechanical engineering student’s first winter in Finland

Blaise’s story

Hello everyone, I am Blaise and I am a second year mechanical engineering student here at Savonia UAS.

I started my studies in the Autumn of 2021 and the reason why I chose to apply for mechanical engineering is that I always wanted to pursue a career in engineering and I like to engineer things myself!

In our degree programme, we have a variety of studies ranging from Mathematics, Physics, 3D modelling using SolidWorks, Manufacturing technology, entrepreneurship, effective communication skills, and many more!

What I like about our studies is that they are both practical and theory oriented! We have had different fascinating projects during our first year, like 3D printing but my favourite was our last spring’s orientation project in which we transformed a regular wheelbarrow into an electric assisted wheelbarrow! 😀

When I arrived in Finland in 2021 and faced my first winter in my life, I was both shocked and astonished! It was absolutely cold for me but it didn’t stop me from looking to the brighter side and enjoy the whiteness snow has to offer! As it has been told to us many times, the secret to surviving winter is to wear enough layers of clothes to make sure you don’t catch the cold outside and try not to be alone and engage in activities available to you.

My plans after graduation is to find a job in Finland in my field of engineering and further my studies at the same time.

For future mechanical engineering students, I would advise them to be active in their academic life, more enthusiastic about their fields and try their best to connect with local people and companies!

Thank you,

Blaise
