Degree Programme of Physiotherapy

This curriculum is a translation of the curriculum of the Finnish degree program.

Curriculum responsibility: Maritta Pitkänen

Basis of Education

The degree program in Physiotherapist leads to a Bachelor's degree in the field of social, health and sports, the degree title is Bachelor of Health Care. The scope of the studies is 210 credits and the duration is 3.5 years. The skills produced by the degree correspond to the level of higher education defined jointly in the European Union, which enables the movement of labor and experts.

Physiotherapy is part of the rehabilitation, exercise, social and health service system. The goal of physiotherapy is to promote and maintain the health, functional capacity and well-being of both individuals and groups. In physiotherapy, physiotherapeutic assessment is used to determine the client's / rehabilitator's movement and activities, as well as the factors that threaten or hinder them in the client's operating environments. Physiotherapy, together with the client / rehabilitator, aims to achieve optimal functional ability, especially mobility. The key is to consider the customer's resources and participate in their living environment, as well as the opportunities offered by the service systems. Physiotherapy is based on the science of physiotherapy, the main focus of which is mobility in relation to a person's ability to function and its relationship to an individual's activity. Physiotherapy focuses in particular on the prevention (risk or disorder) and rehabilitation of functional impairment. Physiotherapy uses evidence-based information and practices produced by one's own discipline, and evidence-based approaches in several different disciplines are also applied.

The physiotherapist works in an entrepreneurial manner and is independently responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation and development of his or her work. He takes into account ethical and legal considerations as well as the requirements of effectiveness, efficiency and economy. In addition, he takes into account the situation of the client and the family and the relevance of the activities. The work of a physiotherapist is customer-oriented and evidence-based. The physiotherapist cooperates with the client and other experts involved in the client's treatment and rehabilitation, as well as as an expert in his or her field in multidisciplinary working groups. Clients can come to the physiotherapist directly or referred by another health care professional. A physiotherapist works either in the service of another, as an entrepreneur or in various projects. Jobs include e.g. hospitals, health centers, research and treatment facilities, welfare companies, rehabilitation facilities and spas, occupational health care, public health, sports and disability organizations, service homes and kindergartens, and school and sports activities.

Legalization as a health care professional

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (VALVIRA) legalizes health care as a legal professional, physiotherapist, at the request of a physiotherapist. The prerequisite for legalization is that 210 cr have been completed in physiotherapist training and the contents in accordance with the curriculum. The task of the university of applied sciences is to verify that the graduating health care professional has the competence required by the professional skills requirements.

Competence Standards

In physiotherapist training, the goal is for the graduating physiotherapist to have extensive and strong clinical expertise in rehabilitation and physiotherapy. She has a preventive approach to work as well as the rehabilitation and entrepreneurship skills of the elderly. A physiotherapist naturally applies knowledge, develops and evaluates his or her own skills and has the skills for continuous learning. The physiotherapist's competence consists of renewable and multidisciplinary knowledge, practical competence, ethics, as well as network competence and interaction skills. Activities should be based on researched information and evidence. The physiotherapist has the necessary skills to utilize and change research in the development of professional activities. Multi-professionalism requires both the special expertise of one's own profession and the expansion of individual expertise into community expertise.

Physiotherapist training is at level 6 according to the European and Finnish Qualification Framework.

The physiotherapist's competence profile consists of competencies. The general qualifications (competencies) of those who have completed a polytechnic degree have been defined at Savonia University of Applied Sciences in accordance with the statement of the Rector's Council of Universities of Applied Sciences (ARENE).

Structure of Studies

The studies of a physiotherapist are 210 credits. According to the curriculum, one year of study corresponds to 60 credits, which means 1,600 hours of student work. The student's work consists of e.g. contact hours, distance and independent study, e-learning and internships. The study includes working life-oriented research and development activities. The studies are divided into basic studies, professional studies, elective studies and thesis work. Studies also include internships and service activities in working life and at school.

Development of Expertise

In Savonia's curricula, the study units form broader study units. In this way, they support the overall development of the student and the development of expertise. At the same time, it is possible to combine teaching and work-based research and development.

The physiotherapist's curriculum is designed so that the degree produces the skills required in working life and the training ensures the development of the student's expertise.

To support his / her studies, the student prepares a personal study plan, in which the previously acquired competence is identified. The student is responsible for the progress of his / her studies. Savonia teachers and other staff guide and support in defining and achieving personal goals.

The student's expertise develops each year in accordance with the designated annual themes, which emphasize professional competence, age competence, entrepreneurial approach and preventive approach.

In the physiotheraphy degree program, these are:
Year 1: Activation of expertise
Year 2: Development of expertise
Year 3: Deepening expertise
Year 4: Physiotherapist as an expert

Methods and implementation

In Savonia, the pedagogical starting point is the Open Innovation Space (OIS2.0) model. It combines high-quality education with research and development activities close to working life. Work-related education emphasizes students' motivation and commitment to studies. The development of students' expertise is promoted in various learning environments, by enabling studying regardless of time and place. Comprehensive student guidance and the identification and recognition of prior learning are part of the students' personal study plan.

The working life orientation of Savonia's education is realized through the diverse networking of teachers. Networks also ensure the continuous development of substance expertise. The staff creates learning situations and supports student learning. Student services, library and information services, international services and other university services help with studying. The training follows the principles of accessibility and sustainable development.

Central to achieving working life skills are working life-oriented courses and theses, as well as internships in working life. In the courses, work-life-oriented implementation includes cooperation projects and authentic learning situations in different operating environments and workplaces. The courses are implemented e.g. as simulations, skill workshops and workshops. The internship takes place every semester. Internships include VireTori learning environment, day care centers, client homes, hospitals, health centers, rehabilitation facilities, physiotherapy companies, various projects and the third sector. Internships are selected in such a way that a diverse understanding of physiotherapy and the work of a physiotherapist is formed during the studies.
Thus, the student develops strong preventive and gerontological rehabilitation skills as well as an entrepreneurial approach.

The curriculum of the degree program defines the objectives of each course, the subject to be covered, the scope in terms of credits, the principles of organizing studies and teaching, and the required credits. The structure of the curriculum is designed as flexible entities. The flexibility of studies is guaranteed, for example, by virtual studies and the use of alternative ways of demonstrating competence.

Internationality with its networks is part of the study. Students study internationality and cultural competence abroad in various exchange programs and in their own educational institution together with international students. Studies can be completed in an international exchange in the third or fourth year of study. In order to develop international competence, students can also do the following studies and courses in a foreign language: Professional in Physiotherapy, 5 ECTS and Health Promotion, 5 ECTS courses, optional studies 10 ECTS, three-month exchange study 15 ECTS, participation in Nordplus intensive course 5 ECTS and Bachelor`s Degree Program in Nursing joint studies in social and health 20 ECTS.

The assessment follows the degree rules of Savonia University of Applied Sciences. Assessment guides and reviews the achievement of the student's study goals. The evaluation criteria are based on the objectives of the course and the student receives information about the evaluation criteria at the beginning of the course. The student also has the right to receive information on the application of the evaluation criteria to his / her study performance.

The implementation planning of the training is carried out every semester. The study courses to be taken during the same semester are planned as a single entity. Quantitative and qualitative feedback is collected from the semester and discussed with students. In addition, the student has the opportunity to give feedback on the courses at the student intranet.
