What to do if I can’t start my studies as planned?
I cannot arrive on campus when my studies begin – what should I do?
✅ Contact Savonia immediately by email: milja.seppala@savonia.fi
✅ After that:
- Complete the Candour identification process
- Start your studies online according to your programme start date
- Arrive in Finland as soon as possible
What are the risks of starting your studies late?
✅ Starting late can have significant consequences:
- You may not earn enough credits during your first year
- This may affect your residence permit (Migri monitors study progress)
- Your chances of receiving a scholarship may decrease
- Your studies may be delayed → leading to additional tuition fees
What happens if I do not start my studies on time?
✅ There can be serious consequences:
- There may not be enough available courses
- You may not be able to follow your Personal Study Plan (PSP)
- You may need to postpone your studies to the next academic year and pay a new tuition fee
Can I still start my studies if I arrive late?
✅ It depends on your degree programme and your arrival time.
- You must begin online studies immediately until you arrive
- Register as present (attending) during August
- Start studies on your programme’s official start date
⚠️ If you arrive too late, it may no longer be possible to complete your first-year studies.
Can I defer my studies to the next year?
✅ Deferral is only possible for legal reasons:
- Medical certificate (health reasons)
- Pregnancy or childbirth
Do I need to do anything before arriving in Finland?
✅ Yes – you must prepare in advance:
- Activate your Savonia user ID
- Start your online studies
This allows you to:
- Access student systems
- Download your official study certificate
- Use the certificate for authorities (e.g. Migri)
What if I receive a negative residence permit decision?
✅ Inform Savonia immediately.
- Your study right will be cancelled
- You cannot participate in on-campus studies
- Check the tuition fee refund policy
Do I have to pay fees even if I have not arrived in Finland?
✅ Yes, in certain situations:
- All students registered as present must pay tuition fees, even if they are not yet in Finland
- You must also pay the student healthcare fee (FSHS/YTHS)
- Payment obligations may begin before your arrival
What if I have registered as absent?
✅ Absence must be based on a legal reason.
- You will be transferred to the next starting group (following autumn)
- Your tuition fee will be moved to the next academic year
