DescriptionThe challenges of university students' ability to study have been researched and recognized to
have increased in recent years. According to a study by the Institute of Occupational Health, the
work ability of young people has also weakened significantly. A weakened ability to study can be
seen e.g. as delays and interruptions in studies and it can appear as a challenge in the student's
transition to working life and coping in working life. The ability to work needed in working life can
be strengthened already during the study period by strengthening the ability to study and the
student's skills to take care of it.
The corona pandemic has changed studying and study communities, and the change has
weakened the study ability, health and well-being of many students. The multi-location of
studying caused by the corona pandemic has brought new challenges for studying well-being.
Students' own challenges in maintaining well-being and insufficient skills weaken students'
ability to study. It may be difficult for students to identify their own obstacles to studying, and
they do not apply for the necessary support, even though it is available both at educational
institutions and through YTHS.
Our operational environments are digitizing at a rapid pace. Higher education institutions have
not yet fully developed and utilized the possibilities of digital technology and various digital
tools and learning analytics for monitoring studies and for the student himself to be able to
monitor his own progress and ability to study. Counselors need the information provided by
analytics about troubled students as early as possible. Since learning ability is also affected by
the learner's environment, teaching and guidance, the entire higher education community is
needed to maintain and support it. More expertise is needed to support students' ability to study
and pedagogical well-being and accessibility.
The project aims to meet these identified needs. The project is implemented as a supraprovincial group project and the project implementers are Karelia University of Applied Sciences,
Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Joensuun Seudun Erilaiset Oppijat ry (JOSE).
Cooperation with KELA and YTHS is carried out in the development measures of the project.
The project has four work packages:
Work package 1. Development of early support in supporting the ability to study.
1.1. Developing group activities that support learning ability as a form of early support
1.2. Data on study ability and the development of learning analytics methods
Work package 2. Studying the promotion of study ability and strengthening work ability in
advance
Work package 3. Gamification of student study progress monitoring, digital experiment
Work package 4. Pedagogical well-being and accessibility
4.1. Development of pedagogical methods that promote well-being.
4.2. Teacher training.
4.3. A prosperous digital student - piloting in the teaching and guidance of a student group
4.4. Analysis of piloting results and further development of methods. Teacher's Guide.
4.5. Accessibility to support the ability to study.
Pedagogical accessibility is developed both by meeting the needs of students and by
strengthening the competence of the teaching staff.
The project creates a new kind of expert network related to learning solutions for university of
applied sciences students and student-oriented services. The project develops the process of
student services with the cooperation of project implementers. Pedagogical skills and practices
that promote teachers' well-being become a natural part of their teaching activities. As a result,
e.g. a model for directing students to services based on learning analytics, a gamified study
monitoring model, a guide to pedagogical methods that promote student well-being, material
supporting study ability and tools for the early support model.
The project's target group is students and staff of universiti
