Savonia is located in three cities: Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus:
Kuopio campus; Microkatu 1, Kuopio
Iisalmi campus: Haukisaarentie 2, Iisalmi
Varkaus campus: Opiskelijankatu 3, Varkaus
Arrival
Campus cities are reached by train or bus, Kuopio campus also by airplane. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is an international airport with good international and domestic connections.
PLEASE NOTE! Savonia does not offer arrival services, i.e. pick-up from airport/train or bus station, key delivery, or transportation for incoming students.
The distances from Helsinki are as follows:
- Iisalmi approx. 500 km
- Kuopio approx 400 km
- Varkaus approx 300 km
From Helsinki it takes 45 minutes by plane to Kuopio, or about 4–5 hours by train or by bus to Kuopio and Varkaus, and about 6 hours to Iisalmi.

Trains
When traveling by train from the Helsinki, choose departure from “Helsinki airport”, instead of Helsinki. This way you will have the commuter train ticket from the airport included for the same price. You may also buy train tickets using the ticketing machine on the
train platform at the airport.
At Helsinki airport take a commuter train to “Tikkurila/Dickursby” station (all names are in both Finnish and Swedish) leaving every 10 or so minutes. At Tikkurila station, take the escalator up to the main area and check the screens for your train, then take the escalator which leads to he corresponding track. Each one has the numbers of the tracks on top.

Visit Kuopio
You can arrive to Kuopio by airplane, train or bus.
Flights
There are some 3-4 daily flights from Helsinki to Kuopio. Kuopio Airport also operates charter flights.
The airport is located 20 km from the city centre. From the Kuopio airport you can take either a local bus or a taxi to the city centre. The local bus number 40 operates between the airport (lentoasema) and the city center on Mon–Fri (approx. between 06:00-19:00). In the city centre this bus arrives at Tulliportinkatu 33 (bus stop: “Keskusta 1”) and it departs to airport at Maljalahdenkatu 31 (bus stop “Keskusta 9”).

You can pre-order a taxi free of charge. The taxi in Kuopio costs approx. 1,65 € / km + basic fee 6-9 €. Uber taxis are limited in Kuopio.
Local buses
Kuopio local bus route planner. You can find the schedules also in Google Maps.
You can pay by using contactless payment (Visa, Mastercard and Eurocard), Google Pay, Apple Pay, cash, or the Kuopio tickets app. The ride in the city area costs 2,85€ when paid with contactless payment or the app, and 4€ when paid with cash. Please note that one ticket is valid for 1 hour, in case you need to take two busses, you can use the same ticket.

Local buses from city center (“Keskusta 1” and “Keskusta 2”) run to Microkatu campus (bus stops “Savilahti E” or “Microkatu”)
By utilizing the local bus route planner you can find the buses between the city center and Savonia main campus (Microkatu 1). Many buses depart from Tulliportinkatu 33 (you can type “Kuopion tori”, “Kuopio market square” or “Keskusta 1” in the route planner). The bus ride from the city center to Microkatu campus takes some 4 – 7 minutes. The buses will drop you off either at Savilahti E or P or Microkatu bus stop:
- Buses 4, 7, 16, 21, 23, 31 stop at Savilahti E (Savilahdentie 8, a road just next to the Microkatu campus).
- Buses 32 and 40 stop at Microkatu (next to the Savonia main entrance)
Please note that there are no info panels in all buses indicating the bus stops.
Buses from Microkatu campus (Savilahti P) to city center (Kuopion tori = Market square)
- Buses 4, 7, 16, 21 and 23 to city center depart along the Savilahdentie (bus stop named Savilahti P) to city center.
- Buses 32 and 40 depart close to the Microkatu campus main entrance (bus stop named Microkatu) heading to city center.
At the city center you can exit e.g. at the main market square (bus stop e.g. “Keskusta 3”, or “Keskusta 9” behind the City Hall).
Local bus between the airport and city center
The airport is located 20 km from the city centre.
The bus number 40 operates between the airport (lentoasema) and the city center (bus stop “Keskusta 1”, Tulliportinkatu 33) on Mon– Fri (from approx. 06:00 to 18:00).
Local bus from city center to the airport
The bus 40 operates between the city center and airport (lentoasema). The bus departs at the bus stop “Keskusta 9” at Maljalahdenkatu 31 (Google maps).
Visit Varkaus
You can reach Varkaus by train directly from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, or by bus. From the train/bus station you can reach Savonia campus (Opiskelijankatu 3) by local buses number 1, 2 and 3.
The buses 1 and 2 depart from the bus stop “Raja-aukio Lu” and reaches bus stop “Ammattiopisto 2 I” after about 10 minutes. The bus number 3 departs from the bus stop “Leunanmäki Lu” and reaches bus stop “Ammattiopisto 2 I” after about 22 minutes.
By foot the distance from the train station to the campus is about 2 km.

Visit Iisalmi
Iisalmi campus
You can arrive to Iisalmi by train, bus or car.
If you arrive by airplane to Finland, book your flight to Helsinki-Vantaa airport. It is not advisable to fly to Kuopio due to lack of connections from the Kuopio airport to Iisalmi. From Helsinki-Vantaa airport one can take a train through Tikkurila to Iisalmi.
At Iisalmi bus/ train station one can take a taxi (tel. +358 100 86 400) to the Savonia campus. The student apartments at Petterinkulma are within a walking distance from the bus / train station. The travelers from border cities can access Iisalmi also by using a car or public transportation.
