A Finnish Nurse with Global Dreams
Sanni’s Student Story
I am currently studying Nursing at Savonia University of Applied Sciences in the international program taught entirely in English. I began my studies about two and a half years ago, and now I’m just a month away from graduating. This is a moment I’ve been looking forward to for a long time!
Before coming to Savonia, I completed a master’s degree in Education. However, I have always been passionate about working closely with people, helping them directly, and making a difference in their everyday lives. That’s what drew me to the field of nursing. I was also motivated by the idea of combining my background in education with healthcare and pursuing an international career, particularly the opportunity to work as a registered nurse in the United States.
Studying at Savonia has been an inspiring and supportive experience. The program is very practical and hands-on, which means that we not only study theory in the classroom but also gain real experience in various healthcare settings. We study a wide range of subjects, from anatomy and pharmacology to clinical skills, evidence-based nursing, and leadership. As a student, I am expected to be proactive, responsible, and open to continuous learning. The teachers are extremely supportive and genuinely want us to succeed. My study counsellor has also been a great help. Together, we planned an individual study path that allowed me to complete my degree in 2.5 years instead of the usual 3.5.
Even though I am Finnish, I have stayed for some time in the United States during my previous studies, so I understand international students very well. Because of this, I feel it’s valuable that Finnish students also join international groups. We can act as a kind of bridge or guide for others, helping them adjust to Finnish culture and studies. Being part of such a diverse community at Savonia has been very rewarding. It has allowed me to learn from others while also supporting them in their journey.
After graduation, my goal is to take the necessary steps to move to the United States and start working as a registered nurse there. I am excited to continue learning, developing my skills, and contributing to healthcare on an international level.
For future students who are considering studying at Savonia, I would say: be brave and curious! Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to create your own unique study path. Take advantage of the excellent support offered by teachers and counsellors, and remember that your motivation and flexibility will open many doors. Studying in an international environment is an amazing opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
