My journey as a Mechanical engineering student at Savonia – Prakash’s Student Story
Hi! My name is Prakash, and I am from Nepal. I am currently living in Kuopio, and I am studying Mechanical Engineering at Savonia University of Applied Sciences. I am in my second year of the programme and really enjoying learning about modern engineering technologies, design, and practical problem-solving.
I started my studies in autumn 2024. The transition into the programme has been exciting, and I feel that I have already learned a lot during this time.
I chose to study Mechanical Engineering because I have always been interested in how machines, tools, and technologies work. I enjoy mathematics, design and building things, and solving technical problems. I also knew that this field offers wide career opportunities in different industries, which motivated me even more to apply.
Studying at Savonia has been a very positive and practical experience. The programme includes subjects such as mathematics, physics, machine design, CAD modelling, manufacturing processes, automation, and project work. The learning environment is modern and very supportive. As a student, I am expected to be active, independent, and responsible. There is a lot of teamwork and hands-on learning, which prepares me well for real working life.
Adjusting to life in Finland was challenging at first. The weather was very different from what I was used to, and the language barrier made daily communication difficult. I also had to get used to a new culture and way of living.
However, I overcame these obstacles by making friends, learning basic Finnish, and joining student activities. Over time, Finland started to feel familiar, safe, and comfortable, and now I feel at home here.
After graduation, I plan to work as a mechanical engineer, possibly in manufacturing, product design, or the energy sector. In the future, I am also interested in continuing my studies at the master’s level. My long-term goal is to build a successful career and contribute to new technological development.
My advice to future students is to stay confident and believe in yourself. Start preparing early, stay organised, and manage your time well. Do not hesitate to ask for help when needed and always communicate with teachers and classmates. Making friends and building connections will make student life easier, and learning some Finnish will also be very helpful. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, stay curious, and take every opportunity to learn and grow.
