Navigating Studies and Life in Finland – A Nursing Student’s Story
Prikshya’s Student Story
My name is Prikshya, and I am studying Nursing (Registered Nurse) at Savonia University of Applied Sciences. I started my studies in autumn 2025.
Choosing this field was easy for me, as I have always wanted to work in healthcare and admired how nurses in Nepal cared for patients with both skill and compassion. I wanted to learn nursing in a country known for high-quality education, and Finland quickly became my first choice. Savonia’s strong reputation and practical approach to teaching convinced me to apply.
Studying at Savonia has been a mix of theory, practice, and teamwork. We study subjects like anatomy, pharmacology, clinical nursing, and the Finnish language. The simulation labs allow us to practise real-life situations in a safe environment. As a student, I am expected to be independent, responsible, and active in both lectures and group work. It can be challenging at times, but the teachers are supportive and always ready to guide us.
Moving from Nepal to Finland was a big step. The cold weather, quiet culture, and language barrier were the hardest parts in the beginning. Everything felt unfamiliar at first, but over time I adjusted. Student mentors helped me with practical matters, and making friends from different countries boosted my confidence. Learning basic Finnish has also made daily life easier.
After completing my degree, I hope to gain professional experience in Finnish healthcare, where I can enhance my nursing skills, work alongside experienced practitioners, and gain deeper insights into modern healthcare practices. My goal is to apply the knowledge and experience I gain at Savonia to provide compassionate, high-quality care and make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. I also hope to continue learning and growing as a professional, staying updated with new techniques, research, and best practices in nursing.
My advice to future applicants is to start preparing early, research the programme thoroughly, and make sure all your documents and language requirements are in order. Learning at least some basic Finnish before arriving will make daily life and clinical training much easier. Be open to new experiences and ready to step out of your comfort zone, as studying abroad will challenge you in many ways. Most importantly, don’t hesitate to ask for help; Savonia’s staff and fellow students are very supportive and can guide you through academic, practical, and personal challenges. Staying proactive, curious, and resilient will help you make the most of your time as an international student.
Studying abroad can be challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Every step brings you closer to your goals.
