From Mechanical Engineering to Smart Systems: My Journey into IoT at Savonia – Nethsara’s Student Story

My name is Nethsara, and I am a first-year student in IoT Engineering at Savonia University of Applied Sciences. I started my studies on the 1st of September 2025, marking an exciting new chapter in my academic and professional journey.

I chose to study IoT Engineering because of my academic background in Mechanical Engineering, which I completed in Sri Lanka. Although this degree gave me a strong engineering foundation, I felt that I needed more, particularly skills related to digitalization, smart systems, and emerging technologies. IoT Engineering perfectly bridges physical systems with software and connectivity, allowing me to expand my knowledge beyond traditional mechanical engineering and move toward future-focused solutions.

Studying at Savonia is highly practical and industry-oriented. The program includes subjects such as electronics, sensors and actuators, embedded systems, programming, networking, cloud platforms, data analytics, and IoT system design. Learning is largely project-based, encouraging teamwork and hands-on problem-solving. As a student, I am expected to be independent, proactive, and responsible, while actively participating in group work, discussions, and presentations. Continuous assessment and real-world projects help develop both technical and professional skills.

Adjusting to life in Finland was both challenging and rewarding. The main obstacles were adapting to the cold climate, cultural differences, and a quieter lifestyle. Initially, everyday tasks and communication required extra effort. However, by staying open-minded, engaging with the international student community, and using Savonia’s student support services, I was able to settle in and feel comfortable in my new environment.

After graduation, my long-term goal is to become an entrepreneur. I aspire to identify real-world problems and develop innovative, IoT-based solutions that create meaningful impact. The knowledge, practical experience, and problem-solving mindset gained at Savonia are key steps toward achieving this goal.

For future students considering Savonia, my advice is to choose a field you are truly passionate about and be clear about your goals. Be prepared for independent learning, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Take advantage of project work, networking opportunities, and the multicultural environment. Studying at Savonia is not only about earning a degree—it is about personal growth, innovation, and preparing for a global future.
