Studying Abroad in Finland: A Life-Changing Experience
Gayatri’s Story
Hello,
My name is Gayatri, and I am a final-year International Business student from Nepal, currently studying at Savonia University of Applied Sciences. Looking back to when I first arrived in Finland in 2023, I can see how much this journey has transformed me academically, professionally, and personally. What started as a dream of studying abroad has now become one of the most meaningful chapters of my life.
I chose to study International Business because I have always been interested in understanding how global markets function and how businesses create value across borders. The idea of working in multicultural environments and contributing to international projects motivated me to take this path. When I discovered Savonia’s program, I was immediately drawn to its practical teaching style, supportive learning environment, and the opportunity to engage with students from many countries.
During my studies, I have built a strong foundation in subjects such as marketing, finance, logistics, business development, and international trade. What I appreciate most is that the learning has never been limited to textbooks. Savonia emphasizes teamwork, real-life case studies, and project-based learning, which have helped me apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Working with classmates from different cultural backgrounds has also been one of the most enriching experiences. These collaborations taught me the importance of communication, adaptability, and respecting different viewpoints—essential skills for anyone aiming to work in global business.
Studying in Finland has been both exciting and challenging. The first few months were a period of adjustment—adapting to the cold weather, new lifestyle, and academic system. But soon, the peaceful environment, safety, and supportive teachers helped me feel at home. Finland’s education system encourages independence and creativity, which has pushed me to think critically and become more confident in my own abilities. The friendships I have made here with people from various parts of the world have become a valuable part of my journey. They have introduced me to new cultures, ideas, and experiences that have broadened my perspective.
As I move closer to graduation, I am planning my next steps with a clear vision. I am particularly interested in building a career in digital marketing, international business development, market research, or global trade operations. I want to explore how modern businesses use technology and innovation to expand beyond their borders. In the long term, I hope to contribute to strengthening Nepal’s connection with global markets and support initiatives that promote cross-cultural collaboration and sustainable business growth.
To students who are planning to study abroad, especially in a country like Finland, my advice is to stay open to learning and never hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. There will be challenges, but each challenge will teach you something valuable. Be proactive, ask questions, and participate in opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, because studying abroad is not just about academics but also about discovering yourself.
