Tuition fee

The legislation concerning tuition fees came into effect on 1 January 2016. According to the legislation, Universities of Applied Sciences are obliged to charge tuition fees for those students who are not citizens of countries of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and starting their degree studies 1 August 2017 and onwards. The legislation concerns degree programmes conducted in English.

The tuition fee is charged for each academic year, and it must be paid by the set date. If a student fails to pay the tuition fee in time, she/he cannot register for the academic year and therefore loses the study place.

The tuition fee is 9700 euros per academic year.

Tuition fee for the 1st academic year

The tuition fee for the 1st academic year is 9700 euros and it must be paid at once by 17 September 2025. It is not possible to pay the 1st years’ tuition fee in instalments.

Savonia UAS will not grant scholarships for the 1st academic year.

The tuition fee must be paid by using the Flywire service. Instructions on how to pay the tuition fee will be sent to those who are admitted to Savonia UAS.

Tuition fee for the upcoming years

The tuition fee for the 2nd and upcoming academic years is 9700 euros per academic year and it is charged in instalments, autumn semester and spring semester separately.

Savonia UAS offers scholarships from the 2nd academic year onwards.

The scholarship covers max. 30% of the tuition fee. To qualify for the scholarship of 20% of the tuition fee, the student must complete at least 60 credits during the previous academic year. The additional 10% of the tuition fee is based on the student’s level of proficiency in the Finnish language.

Savonia UAS grants scholarships only for the tuition fee. The scholarship is not paid to the student but is deducted directly from the tuition fee.

Exemption from the tuition fee

Exemption from the tuition fee is given for:

  • Citizens of  EU/EEA countries or Switzerland or the family members of such persons who have a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen in Finland
  • permanent (type P) residence permit in Finland
  • a long-term resident’s EU residence permit for third-country citizens (type P-EU permit) in Finland
  • a residence permit based on temporary protection
  • an EU Blue Card in Finland
  • Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement (Brexit residence permit)
  • continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland IF it is granted on the basis of employment AND if the applicant’s first residence permit in Finland was not granted on the basis of studies
  • continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland based on family ties IF the first residence permit of the applicant or family member was not granted on the basis of studies

Please note, that the residence permit in another EU/EEA country is not sufficient grounds for exemption, only residence permits in Finland can be considered.

The residence permit must be valid when the study right begins (1 August). Please check Studyinfo.fi for more information.

Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences make the decision whether you are required to pay fees or not based only on the Finnish Immigration Service’s residence permit decision, which is checked from the copy of your residence permit card attached to your application documents.

If you have applied for residence permit but have not received the decision by the date when the tuition fee is due, you will have to pay the fee.

Refund policy

The paid tuition fee can be fully refunded in the following cases:

  • If the student gets the negative residence permit decision before the study right has started, that is by 31 July, the study place is cancelled and the tuition fee paid towards the upcoming academic year is fully refunded.
  • In the beginning of studies, if the student has not registered for the academic year by the set date (15 September), the study place is cancelled and the tuition fee paid towards the upcoming academic year is fully refunded. This does not apply to students who are admitted on the Direct Application, selection method: interview in Shanghai, China. They will have their own registration deadline.
  • During the studies, if the student resigns (e.g. transfers to another UAS) before the next academic year has started, that is by 31 July, the tuition fee paid towards the next academic year is fully refunded.

The tuition fee can be partially refunded in the following cases:

  • If the student has paid the tuition fee for the whole academic year and he/she graduates during the first semester, the tuition fee paid towards the second semester is refunded.
  • If the student has paid the tuition fee for the whole academic year and he/she resigns (e.g. transfers to another UAS) during the first semester, the tuition fee paid towards the second semester is refunded.

The tuition fee cannot be refunded in any other circumstances. For example,

  • In the beginning of studies, if a student decides not to arrive to Finland or cancels the study place for other reasons than getting a negative residence permit decision, the tuition fee is not refunded.
  • During the studies, if the student resigns (e.g. transfers to another UAS) during the second semester of the academic year the tuition fee is not refunded.
  • If the student’s enrollment status is changed to absent after paying the fee, the tuition fee is not refunded but transferred to the next academic year.
